Pioneering the Virtual Aisle: The History of Online Marital Services and the Rise of VOWs

Following the initial inspiration to create a service for geographically separated couples, my next crucial step was to delve into the history of video call-based weddings. I wanted to ensure that the service I envisioned, Virtual Online Weddings (VOWs), would offer something genuinely new and original in the market.

My research was extensive. I searched far and wide to uncover any existing commercial ventures similar to what I was proposing. Interestingly, I discovered that the earliest forms of virtual weddings were private affairs. Eastern European immigrants in the US had utilized Skype to marry women back in their home countries, often with a minister present alongside the bride. However, these were individual arrangements, not facilitated by any commercial service akin to my vision for VOWs.

I also stumbled upon an intriguing initiative from 2015: Ikea launched a virtual wedding service that was undeniably unique and impressive. However, after producing a single sample video, it appeared that Ikea did not proceed with conducting any more ceremonies, and the initiative seemed to fade away, leaving behind only their initial marketing video.

While I admired Ikea's innovative approach, I lacked a dedicated wedding studio with elaborate props like Ikea could easily provide. My vision for VOWs was also more ambitious. I aimed to create a more immersive experience than just seeing heads on a screen. I envisioned utilizing green screening and broadcasting applications like OBS Studio to craft virtual backdrops and incorporate digital decorations.

My research also revealed the existence of non-video call-based marital services. One text-based service, formerly known as virtualvows(dot)com, had garnered tens of thousands of users over the years. This gave me considerable encouragement, as it demonstrated a clear demand for remote connection in matters of the heart. I was confident that with contemporary and evolving technology, I could create something even more realistic and emotionally resonant. As a side note, this particular text-based service ceased operations around 2017, coinciding with VOWs' initial year of operation.

Therefore, while VOWs may not have facilitated the absolute first online, real-time weddings, I was (and remain) confident that it was indeed the world's first ongoing, commercial video call enterprise dedicated to online marital ceremonies, presented in a novel and more interactive format.

The subsequent months involved a period of experimentation with Skype and various broadcasting applications to construct a virtual environment that felt as lifelike and emotionally engaging as possible.

On 7th December 2016 I conducted the first VOWs event: a Unity Ceremony for a lovely young couple in Romania. I offered them the ceremony for free so as to get some nice video for marketing purposes and for my own learning experience as well. Happily it went off without a hitch, the couple had a moving experience, and I was inspired further by their tears of joy and clear love for one another.

And the fact that it wasn't a 'legal' affair seemed utterly insignificant. True love, after all, transcends legal and religious boundaries!

In July 2017 VOWs received its first official booking. It was for a Unity Ceremony between a Christian woman in the US and her fiancé, a Muslim gentleman residing in Saudi Arabia at the time. They had connected online about a year prior and had never met in person. Yet, during our pre-ceremony video calls and correspondence, their deep connection and evident love for each other were palpable.

Remarkably, the groom faced significant personal risk, as marrying someone outside of the Islamic faith is strictly prohibited and punishable by imprisonment under Saudi Arabian law.

Approximately fifteen minutes into their ceremony, as tears began to flow on both sides of the world, I realized again that VOWs was achieving precisely what I had hoped. It was providing couples with a convenient and modern way to celebrate and strengthen their bonds of love, regardless of their geographical locations.

It wasn't until the unprecedented circumstances of the Covid-19 pandemic that other similar video call services began to emerge. During that challenging period, I felt immense satisfaction in being able to assist couples in need. While the ceremonies do provide a modest income, it is primarily the tears of joy and the outpouring of positive emotions that continue to fuel my passion for helping couples. Even after over 23 years in this industry, the goosebumps I get when witnessing couples' heartfelt vows and tears of happiness never fade.

Looking ahead, with the advent of future technologies such as holograms and the increasing sophistication of artificial intelligence, it will be fascinating to observe how VOWs evolves, particularly with upcoming generations who are even more deeply connected to the digital world.
